Delhi gets wings to touch Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is going to come closer to the National Capital Region (NCR) and so are the hill stations. In the coming days, tourists will be able to board helicopters to reach the Taj Mahal from Ghaziabad, as Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd. is planning to connect the Taj Mahal, Mathura and some hill stations with the satellite city of Ghaziabad.

A team of three senior officials of the company, along with the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) officials, surveyed three sites for building a helicopter terminal for for this purpose. According to sources, the terminal will be the nodal centre of Pawan Hans to connect hill stations, religious places and historical sites in northern India with the NCR.

The GDA sources revealed that the three-member Pawan Hans team, led by its marketing head Sanjay Kumar, reached the GDA head office on Friday afternoon and conducted a primary survey of three locations for the construction of the terminal. D P Singh, OSD at GDA, coordinated with the team and showed them the sites. According to well-placed sources with the GDA, the team showed its interest in two sites, one a 25-acre plot of land in Pratap Vihar on the bank of the river Hindon and the second a 20 to 25-acre plot in Noor Nagar along the Meerut Road.

Though the Pawan Hans officials refused reveal any details of the project, the senior officials of the GDA are hopeful that the site in Pratap Vihar will be finalised. The helicopter terminal will have four helipads and a parking area for its fleet along with necessary facilities for tourists.

In the first stage, the city will be connected to the most favoured tourist locations in western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand – Agra, Mathura and the hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital. The expansion of the project will be based on the tourist demand in the area. The strength of the fleet, the cost of the project and its routes are yet to be determined.
