Delhi gets a hit of riptide movement

The dublin-based rock band Riptide Movement paid a visit to the capital for a live performance at the Café Morrison on 19 October. Formed in 2006, the band has Mal Tuohy as the band’s vocalist and John Dalton on the guitar, Ger McGarry  on the bass and harmonica and Gar Byrne on drums. Millennium Post caught up with the band. Here are excerpts from interview:

What’s the story of your band? How did it all start?

We were a group of friends who have been involved in the Dublin music scene and have been playing together for six years now. That’s how Riptide Movement came together.

Tell us something about the kind of music you are interested in?

We are interested in blues, folk, rock, and the kind of music The Doors are known for.

This your first time in India. Are you familiar with Indian music?

No, we are not familiar with Indian music at all. Actually Indian music isn’t well known in Ireland.

Does the name of the band have something to do with the kind of compositions you create?

Not really. We’re into surfing so the name comes from riptides in the ocean.

Why the name Riptide Movement?

Well, I suppose we are a movement. So, being an independent band, we compose, write our own music, and also market it. It wouldn’t be wrong  to say we are a movement.

What does music mean to you?

Our music is life changing and soul affirming, that is how we like to define it.

So far, what has been the most memorable experience as a band?

The most memorable moment was playing support for Bon Jovi. That has been our greatest high so far.

What did you expect from the crowd here in Delhi ?

We performed some vintage folk rock as well as some tracks from our latest album Keep On, Keeping On. We hope the crowd enjoyed our music. Wherever we have gone, people have enjoyed our music, so here also we expect Delhi would have done the same.

So what’s next on the agenda?

Promoting our new album Keep On Keeping On is what we are concentrating on.
