Delhi court rejects MNS chief’s plea for exemption from personal appearance

Maharshtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s plea for exemption from personal appearance in the court  has been rejected by a city court, which is hearing the case on the direction of the Supreme Court. He has been booked in a case of alleged hate speeches against the people of Bihar. In 2010, the apex court, on the plea of Thackeray, had transferred this case as well as other cases in the alleged hate speech cases to Delhi.

Thackeray wanted exemption from personal appearance on the ground that since he has been given Y-security, he is unable to appear before the court. Rejecting this, additional chief metropolitan magistrate Devendra Kumar Sharma said, ‘This is no ground for exemption. The person has already been provided security and thus he is supposed to appear before the court. Otherwise also, a bailable warrant has been issued against him on 3 January, 2009. Exemption plea is dismissed.’ The court also directed MNS spokesperson Shirish Parkar to appear before it. Parkar has also been named as an accused in the complaint. The court had earlier issued notices to both the accused for 22 June but they had sought exemption from personal appearance. The court, while allowing Parker’s plea for exemption on medical grounds,  rejected Thackeray’s plea.

The court is hearing a complaint filed by by a member of Bihar state bar council, advocate Premchandra Jaiswal, against Thackeray’s alleged hate speeches against the people of Bihar and demeaning their religious festival ‘Chhath’ and MNS party workers criminally intimidating them.
