Delhi bloodied before Holi

Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Deepak Bharadwaj (62), who contested the 2009 elections from west Delhi constituency and was termed the richest contestant in the 15th Lok Sabha elections with assets around Rs 614 crore, was shot dead by three unidentified, armed assailants on Tuesday morning at his 35-acre Nitish Kunj farmhouse in Rajokri area of south Delhi.

According to an officer investigating the case, the assailants entered the farmhouse at 8.55 am in their dark grey Skoda on the pretext of booking a room for wedding purpose. They had shown their ID cards at the main gate. ‘Bharadwaj was taking a walk in his lawn that is a few meters away from the main gate when the car stopped and the men spoke to him for few minutes. They had a heated argument after which they shot him and escaped at 9.17 am,’ the official said, quoting an eye-witness.

‘The CCTV footage recovered from the cameras installed near the entry-exit point clearly show two assailants. The number plate of the car was DL3C 7062, but after verification it was found to be a fake number,’ Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south), said.

Bharadwaj received three gunshot injuries - one on his head and the other two near his chest. He was immediately rushed to the nearby Research and Referral Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Later, his body was sent to AIIMS for post-mortem.

The family members and farmhouse workers were questioned. Bharadwaj has two sons, Hitesh and Nitesh. They have been living separately from the past few years. Hitesh (35) is separated from his wife who is the cousin of Shah Rukh Khan’s wife Gauri Khan. Nitesh (32) has a real estate business. A case under section-302 (murder) and other appropriate sections of the IPC has been registered at Vasant Kunj (south) police station against unidentified assailants.

A man allegedly shot his wife and her father outside east Delhi’s Karkardooma Metro station on Tuesday afternoon.

‘The woman, identified as Deepti, 25, died while her father, Bishan Das, 55, was critically injured after her husband allegedly shot at them outside the Karkardooma Metro station in east Delhi,’ a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official said.

The police said there was no security breach at the Metro station as the assailant shot at the two from outside. He did not carry the weapon inside the metro station.

‘The incident took place around 12:10 pm outside the Karkardooma Metro station. Five empty cartridges and a double-barrel rifle have been recovered from the spot,’ said the official.

He added the accused is on the run. He fled the spot after the shooting, leaving his car outside the Metro station.

‘The woman, Deepti, and her father, Bishan Das, were shot from behind,’ the official said. Deepti was immediately rushed to the Deepak Memorial Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Her father Bishen Das is undergoing treatment at the Hedgewar Arogya Sansthan Hospital. Das is a resident of Chirag Dilli.

According to police officials, Das has said there was a marital discord between Deepti and her husband, and his daughter was going through a divorce. This lead to many fights between them. She was staying with her parents.

‘We are probing the matter. Our teams are trying to arrest the accused,’ said senior police official. According to Delhi metro officials, services were not affected after the incident.
