SUPER-RICH BSP LEADER SHOT DEAD IN RAJOKRI FARMHOUSE

Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Deepak Bharadwaj (62), who contested the 2009 elections from west Delhi constituency and was termed the richest contestant in the 15th Lok Sabha elections with assets around Rs 614 crore, was shot dead by three unidentified, armed assailants on Tuesday morning at his 35-acre Nitish Kunj farmhouse in Rajokri area of south Delhi.

According to an officer investigating the case, the assailants entered the farmhouse at 8.55 am in their dark grey Skoda on the pretext of booking a room for wedding purpose. They had shown their ID cards at the main gate. ‘Bharadwaj was taking a walk in his lawn that is a few meters away from the main gate when the car stopped and the men spoke to him for few minutes. They had a heated argument after which they shot him and escaped at 9.17 am,’ the official said, quoting an eye-witness.

‘The CCTV footage recovered from the cameras installed near the entry-exit point clearly show two assailants. The number plate of the car was DL3C 7062, but after verification it was found to be a fake number,’ Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south), said.

Bharadwaj received three gunshot injuries - one on his head and the other two near his chest. He was immediately rushed to the nearby Research and Referral Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Later, his body was sent to AIIMS for post-mortem.

The family members and farmhouse workers were questioned. Bharadwaj has two sons, Hitesh and Nitesh. They have been living separately from the past few years. Hitesh (35) is separated from his wife who is the cousin of Shah Rukh Khan’s wife Gauri Khan. Nitesh (32) has a real estate business. A case under section-302 (murder) and other appropriate sections of the IPC has been registered at Vasant Kunj (south) police station against unidentified assailants.
