Decomposed body of doctor recovered from rented accommodation in Dum Dum

Mystery shrouds the death of a doctor whose partly decomposed body was found in his rented house at South Dum Dum on Sunday morning.

Police said the victim Dr Gautam Pal, who is originally a resident of Sovabazar in North Kolkata, had been staying in a rented house at Lalgarh area in South Dum Dum. He was doctor of medicine. He was posted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The landlord of the house had gone out for a trip a few days ago. There was no one else in the two storey building and Dr Pal used to reside in a room on the first floor.

The road side window of the room was open and the local people had been getting foul smell since late Saturday night.

On Sunday morning, the people found a local Councillor passing from the area and approached her. She also got the smell and informed the police.

Policemen from the local police station reached the spot and found the room locked from inside. Breaking the door they found the doctor’s body lying upside down on the bed.

The police sent the body for an autopsy and informed his family members at Sovabazar.

Preliminary investigation revealed that he had not been going to the hospital for the past 10 days. Police suspect that Dr Pal had died at least one and a half days ago. There was a blood clot on his ear and bruises on his face. His mobile phone was also found in his room.

The police are yet to ascertain whether his death is suicidal or homicidal in nature. Thus, they questioned some of his family members who stay at Sovabazar. He had not been in touch with rest of his family members and he also used to come out of his room very less at South Dum Dum as well.

A police officer said that they are waiting for the post-mortem report as it is quite important for the case. Police would also question some of his neighbours in South Dum Dum.
