DCW to set up special cell for women from North-East

Taking cognizance of the issues raised by rights groups, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has decided to set up a Special Cell to address problems faced by women from the North-East in the national Capital.

“We will soon set up a Special Cell to address issues and problems faced by North-Eastern women in the national Capital. Over the time, complaints of racism, eve teasing and harassment against North-Eastern women along with concern of their safety have come to light and thus the decision has been taken,” said a DCW official.

A delegation of people from North-East on Friday met the newly appointed DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal and held a meeting on the matter. DCW has also decided to organise comprehensive discussions with institutions, several NGOs and human rights groups on the issue at a conference scheduled to be held in Delhi soon. “Women from Northeast come to Delhi in search of livelihood and face several problems here, most of which often go unreported. Safety of these women is a major concern and this conference will be an attempt to reach the root cause of these problems and solve them,” said the official. The Special Cell will comprise members from legal sector, NGOs and students.

Meanwhile, police on Friday said an attempt was made to molest a woman from Nagaland in Malviya Nagar area. A person has been arrested in this connection, they said.
