DCW issues notice to police, social welfare department

Delhi Commission for Women has issued notices to the Social Welfare department and Delhi Police in connection with shortage of old age homes in the city.

While the Delhi government’s Social Welfare Department has been asked to explain the non-implementation of Senior Citizens Act which calls for one old age home in each district, Delhi Police have been asked whether or not it is sharing a monthly report with the Commissioner over crimes against senior citizens.

“The commission has observed an acute shortage of old age homes in Delhi. As per the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, it is mandatory for the department to establish at least one old age home in each district. It has been observed that the said act has not been implemented properly,” a DCW official said. “The department of Social Welfare has been asked to explain the steps taken for implementation of the act and reasons behind shortage of old age homes. It has also been asked to share pending proposals, if any...,” he added.
