She also appealed to the judiciary for fast trial in rape cases. “Welcome Uber rape case verdict. Appeal to judiciary and government to ensure all rape cases especially child rape cases to be tried within 1 year,” Maliwal tweeted.

Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja on Tuesday sentenced cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav to life in prison till death for raping a woman executive on December 5 last year. On that night, the woman hired the cab to head back home in north Delhi’s Inderlok area. Police said Yadav drove the woman to an isolated place and raped her.

Yadav was convicted last month on charges of rape, causing grievous bodily harm and endangering the life of the woman, and other charges dealing with kidnapping, criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing hurt.

As the rapist Uber driver got life imprisonment till death on Tuesday, the victim’s family expressed satisfaction but said repeat offenders must never get bail for such crime. “I am highly satisfied with the verdict of the sessions court that sentenced the driver to life imprisonment within 10 months of the start of hearing,” the father of the rape victim said. -
