Daryaganj police tighten noose on auto lifters

Alarmed by the high number of auto theft cases registered in the capital, the Daryaganj police has tightened its vigil on suspected auto lifters.

Around 50 cases of auto lifting are reported in the capital every day. Since a major part of these cases are reported from the busy market area of Daryaganj, the police have been asked to pay extra care to the issue. Strict vigilance is being ensured in the area to minimize the number of such cases.

‘The biggest reason for these thefts is non-availability of parking places in the congested residential areas, lanes and commercial complexes. Also, owners should be more careful about the safety of their cars,’ an officer said.

Daryaganj police station covers congested areas such as Ansari Road, Pataudi House and Delhi Gate, where there is dense population and also a higher number of vehicles.

‘The police officials are tracing the movements of auto lifter who have been released after completing their prison terms. These auto lifters are repeat offenders, who are usually released on bail after staying behind bars for a few months,’ a police officer said.

All police personnel in Daryaganj area conduct thorough checks at shops of the scrap dealers who help auto lifters dismantle and sell stolen vehicles.

Till now, the police officials have traced around 100 stolen vehicles. Police said criminals often abandon stolen vehicles on the roadside after failing to dispose them of. The police officials have also been asked to keep in touch with police from other states to trace stolen vehicles.

Cars stolen from the capital are often seized in other states and the move is expected to speed up recovery of such vehicles.

Police sources said most arrested auto lifters revealed that they preferred selling stolen vehicles in different states such as Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh.
‘We hope these initiatives bring down motor vehicle theft cases,’ the officer said.
