Dacoits loot Salt Lake household, 5 held

A gang of dacoits stormed into the house at CE block and looted ornaments at gunpoint. Police said that the miscreants congregated in the area at around 8.30 pm and were waiting outside a three storey building. 

The house owner Amarnath Chakraborty went to visit a doctor when the incident took place. When Chakraborty’s elder daughter Namrata opened the door at the first floor of the building, the dacoits forcibly entered the house and put the family on gun point. 

The miscreants also snatched mobile phones from the family members and they cooped up four female members present at the house including a maid servant in separate rooms and tied them with pieces of clothes.

The family members told the police that the dacoits had kept them at gun point and asked them to show where the valuables were kept. The miscreants carried out the operation for next one hour and took away valuable ornaments worth Rs 5 lakh and Rs 50,000 hard cash, mobile phones and wrist watches from the house.

 After carrying out the loot the dacoits fled. The family members could not tell police about what vehicles the miscreants had used.

The family members somehow managed to free themselves and informed the police. Police reached the spot with sniffer dogs. Forensic experts visited the house and collected samples on Saturday morning. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the dacoits had prior information that valuables were stored in the house. The investigating officers believe that it was a preplanned dacoity and the dacoits were keeping an eye on the house for last few days.

Police are investigating of involvement of any persons who were familiar with the Chakraborty family. On the basis of the description of the family members, the police have published two sketches of the accused who had masterminded the incident.

It may be mentioned that following a stringent policing in Salt Lake the incidents of theft, snatching has gone down in last few months. This incident has again brought some security lapses in the area. Police have started a probe and local residents and the family members of Chakraborty were being interrogated by the police. Meanwhile, after interrogating those who have been held in this connection, police have got some important leads relating to the incident.
