Currency ban: W Midnapore, Bankura farmers affected

Farmers in two parts of West Midnapore and Bankura were facing problems in procuring potato seeds due to the Centre’s decision of demonetising Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

According to the sources in the state agriculture department, farmers in those areas do not have sufficient money to buy seeds. They all have Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Since the number of banks in those areas are less, a large section of farmers couldn’t exchange the notes with lower denominations.

At the same time those who have notes of lower denominations are also facing trouble as Rs 4,000 which they have withdrawn is not sufficient to buy the quantity seeds they require. It may leave an impact on the yield in those areas if farmers fail to sow seeds at right time.
