Crane collapses in Howrah station

Tension ran high at Howrah station on Tuesday after a portion of a crane which was being used for the East West Metro works collapsed. Few months ago, a crane was put between platform number 16 and 17 inside Howrah station after the construction work for East West Metro services started at Howrah Maidan.

On Tuesday noon, a portion of the crane suddenly collapsed on the shed at the platform number 14 triggering tension in the area. Some people suffered minor injuries in this incident. Following the incident, senior railway officials rushed to the spot took a stock of the situation. The railway officials refused to make any comment on this issue. A portion of the platform was damaged in the incident.
Police said that some people suffered minor injuries in the accident. They were taken to a nearby hospital but their injuries were not serious in nature.

The local people said that a major tragedy was averted as the platform was empty at the time of the accident. They said that they heard a loud thud when the portion of the crane fell on the platform. As there was no train in the platform, a massive tragedy has been averted. The local residents have raised question as why a crane was being used at the construction site that was not fit to work. They also alleged that there was no proper maintenance of equipments. They demanded a high level inquiry into the incident.

Metro railway authorities have ordered a probe into the incident. A departmental inquiry has been initiated by the metro railway authorities.
