CPM top brass focus on tackling dissent, prevent split in party

Thus, while the pro-Congress coalition lobby of the West Bengal state committee survived by the skin of their teeth as they were universally castigated by almost all of the 100-odd member CC, no heads rolled.

On the contrary, the final resolution of the party read that they needed ‘rectification’ of their political-tactical line on account of being ‘not in consonance’ with the anti-Congress resolution of the 21st Party Congress.

Earlier, the word that was being used in the meeting was ‘violation,’ which would have meant a purge in the party that could not have left behind its general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, who had favoured the West Bengal unit’s deviation.

In a communist party, the Party Congress is the ultimate authority, which lays down the policy, all of the party will follow. But West Bengal unit that earlier used to bankroll the central party thus wielded major clout, appear not to have realised their much diminished status.

The condition of the decrepit state unit is such that though they sought to brazen it out at the CC meet, there still were dissenting voices within the state unit which raised fundamental questions about the way the state party is being run.

One such senior trade union leader told Millennium Post, “There is no task more important now than rebuilding the party.”

The spinmeisters of the current general secretary, Yechury are spreading the word that had the compromise not engineered by him succeeded, then the party would have split many times over.

However, the pro-coalition West Bengal leaders, who provided such facetious arguments like they could campaign amidst untold violence perpetrated by the Trinamool Congress unless they had tied up with the Congress Party only show their sleight of hand than any political judgment.

The Congress Party in West Bengal, which lives mostly in Bidhan Bhavan state headquarters, besides various television studios, is to be believed to have been the saviour of the CPI (M) that had ousted from power 34 years ago. Since then, they have split by Mamata Bannerjee to such an extent that no single Congress Party office exists in all of the 25 districts of the state.

In fact, it can be argued that in these districts where the TMC goons had already taken over the district party offices of both the Congress Party and the CPI (M)’s or any of its Left allies’, they have a problem of plenty. And this Congress Party, according to the likes of the state party secretary was to be savior of the communists of the state.
