Court rejects Sambia Sohrab’s bail plea, grants it to friends

Jhony and Shanu, friends of Shambia Sohrab who were arrested in connection with the Red Road hit and run case, were granted bail after being produced before the Bankshall Court on Friday. The court extended the judicial custody of Shambia as he was booked with murder charges.

The city police’s detective department had filed 350 pages charge-sheet on Thursday in connection with the hit-and-run case. In the chargesheet the police had mentioned that Shambia was driving the offending car. His two friends and father Md Sohrab were booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code on charges of tampering evidence and helping the accused abscond.

The sections in which Jhony and Shanu were booked are bailable offences. Thus their counsels pleaded before the court on Friday to grant them bail. The state counsel didn’t oppose the bail plea considering that the charges against them are bailable. A senior police officer, however, said that they had opposed the bail and they will do the same in future hearings also. The court granted bail to both of them against a bail bond of Rs 1500 each.

In the charge-sheet, the police mentioned that Shambia was driving the car that hit the IAF officer and took his life. Moreover, there was no one in the car apart from Shambia.

Shambia’s counsel too submitted before the court to grant bail to him. The state’s counsel had opposed the bail plea. The court has extended his judicial custody till March 21.
