Couple throws infant into river in Alipurduar

A couple allegedly dumped their new-born in a river in Alipurduar. Some local residents rescued the baby and sent him to the hospital for treatment. The incident took place near Tora River Bridge on Thursday morning.

Police said that the couple was standing on the river bridge with a bag and some local people noticed that one of them suddenly dropped the bag in the river. Within a few seconds, they heard the sound of a baby crying from the bag.

Some people jumped in the river and recovered the bag and found the baby chained up inside the bag.

After being rescued, the baby was taken to the Alipurduar Zilla Hospital. The infant is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Local people caught the couple while they were trying to flee on a motorcycle after throwing the baby into the river.

Police later arrested the two, who are believed to be the biological parents of the baby. Police came to know during interrogation that the couple was originally from Bhutan and had been living in Alipurduar for a long time. The police have started a detailed probe into the incident.

A senior official at the hospital said there was nothing to worry about the health of the baby and that he is recovering well. “The baby is totally out of danger,” the health official said. He added that after the infant recovers he would be handed over to the Child Welfare Committee which would decide on its upbringing.
