Couple found dead in tourist lodge at Malbazar

Mystery shrouds the death of a couple, whose bodies were recovered from a lodge at Malbazar
in Jalpaiguri district on Wednesday evening. Police said there were several wounds on both the bodies. They arrived at a tourist lodge at Murti and introduced themselves as husband and wife.

According to preliminary investigation, police suspect that the youth, identified as Om Prakash Harijan, might have killed the woman and then committed suicide. Police said that both the bodies had injuries on their throats and wrists, which might have been made by a blade. Police suspect that the youth was into an illicit relationship with the woman.

On Thursday morning, the staff of the lodge found that the door was locked from the inside and the couple was not responding despite repeated knocks.

They informed the matter to the police, who rushed to the spot and broke open the door only to find the two bodies lying in a pool of blood.  Police are yet to ascertain the identity of the woman and suspect that the couple was not really married. They are investigating whether the man had brought the woman with the specific purpose of killing her. They have recovered some liquor bottles from the room.

The staff of the lodge told the police that the couple was behaving normally and no one had any
suspicions about the nature of their relationship. Police personnel interrogated the staff members
and owners of the lodge and asked them as to why they did not ascertain the identity of the couple.
