Couple beaten up for casting votes in favour of Trinamool

Post-poll violence in different parts of the state continues as a couple was beaten up for casting votes in favour of Trinamool Congress and a TMC party office was  also torched.

Paresh Burman and his wife Minu Burman was beaten up allegedly by RSP supporters at Dahaghat village near Balurghat in South Dinajpur on Wednesday afternoon.

The RSP supporters had threatened them not to go to cast their votes on April 17.

But braving all odds they cast their votes. On Wednesday around 15 to 20 RSP workers attacked them and ransacked their house. They beat up the couple with bamboo sticks.

Later police went to the spot and took them to Balughat District Hospital. They were admitted to the hospital with severe injuries on their heads. Police are yet to arrest anyone in this connection.

At Panitras in Howrah, Trinamool Congress workers were attacked allegedly by CPI(M) and Congress-backed goons. The Trinamool Congress workers had somehow managed to leave the place finding that a large number of miscreants were marching their party office. Some of the Trinamool Congress workers were also being allegedly manhandled.

The miscreants damaged the valuables in the party office and set it on fire. The incident led to tension in the area as hundreds of villagers came out after the incident and staged demonstration.

It may be mentioned that the house of a Trinamool Congress worker was torched allegedly by CPI(M) and Congress supporters in the same area. Trinamool Congress workers were also being beaten up at Sheyara village near Sandeshkhali in North 24-Parganas on April 27. CPI(M) backed goons had also ransacked their houses. The same day Congress-backed goons had attacked the house of a polling agent of Trinamool Congress at Binola village in Amta. The accused beat up the agent Ananda Shankar Santra and his mother Sulekha Santra after dragging them out of their house.

At Halisahar in North 24-Parganas, a youth Papan Saha was shot at by some unidentified miscreants and they also beat up his friend Sanjay Dey with revolver butt. On Tuesday night, the miscreants were searching for the youth when the duo was busy gossiping in an open ground. Realising that the miscreants were coming to attack them, they tried to flee. Saha received injuries when the miscreants opened fire. They caught Dey as he stopped when Saha was shot at and beat him up.

In another major incident bombs were recovered from house of CPI(M) worker Gangadhar Maity at Dhabramaka near Patashpur in East Midnapore late on Tuesday night. The election in East Midnapore is scheduled to be held on May 5.

Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid at Maity’s house and recovered 22 bombs. A huge number of bomb making materials was also recovered from his residence.
