Corporation to hike surface parking fees in posh south Delhi markets

Next time you go shopping in the premium south Delhi markets,  such as Lajpat Nagar market and Defence Colony market, be prepared to pay  extra for parking  as the rates in these areas belonging to  South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) have been increased.

The ruling BJP has given its in-principal approval to increase parking rates in these areas when the commissioner, Manish Gupta, proposed it in his budget speech.

‘The commuters prefer surface parking, which is a major cause for congestion. We are planning to encourage multi-level parking by increasing surface parking fee,’ Gupta said.  The commissioner has divided the parking into three categories – premium surface parking, surface parking, and multi-level parking. ‘The rates for multi-level parking will not be increased,’ added Gupta.

The corporation expects 20 per cent increase in revenue from parking charges. The commissioner also accepted that it is impossible to provide parking for all private vehicles in the city.

According to the proposal, the civic body will charge Rs 10 for parking a car in premium markets for 30 minutes, Rs 20 for one hour and Rs 50 for three hours and Rs 20 for every additional hours thereafter.

In non-premium area the parking rate for the first hour would be Rs 10, while the owner will have to pay Rs 20 for two hours, Rs 50 for six hours and Rs 10 for every additional hours thereafter.

The shop keepers and residents of the area have to pay Rs 1,500 per month for cars and Rs 750 per month for a two-wheelers. The parking of commercial vehicles is strictly banned in these areas.
