Corporate Espionage: RIL admits its official handed out CBI notice

Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) on Tuesday admitted that one its officers, was served with CBI notice in connection with the ongoing “Corporate Espionage” case, a day after denying about it.

“A notice to witness has been served on one of our officers on Tuesday. The company is ascertaining the facts and will be able to decide its course of action after his interaction with the authorities,” an RIL spokesperson said.

“We are not revealing his name. Let the CBI disclose his name,” he added. On Monday, the CBI claimed that a top official of RIL was summoned for his alleged involvement in procuring “confidential classified documents” from Ministry of Finance and Commerce. He was called for examination after his name was revealed by one of the arrested Mumbai based Chartered Account Khem Chand Gandhi in the same case.

The agency had also summoned Rajendra P. Chitale, a well known Mumbai based law firm Chitale & Associates and he is expected to be in New Delhi on Wednesday for questioning. Chitale is also in the Reliance board of director’s list owned by Anil D. Ambani. He is a law graduate cum Chartered Accountant and is a Managing Partner of Chitale & Associates, which is India’s one of the leading boutique structuring, legal and tax advisory firm based in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, two senior officials of international consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) identified as “S. Marwa” and “Mr Kapoor” met CBI officers, sources said. To avoid media coverage, they met the CBI officers at an adjoining government building, which is close to the CBI headquarters.

CBI sources said: “Some of the officials of PwC will be examined because our officers have seized some government documents from there, which is not supposed to be in their possession. It seems that there are some links with PwC and firms dealing with oil and natural gases because some of the documents relates to these sectors.” It has come to light that an official of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
