Cops question Asaram, ‘godman’ dictates time

Asaram, charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl, was finally questioned at an Indore ashram by officials of Jodhpur police on Saturday night.

The self-styled godman reportedly told the police they should finish the questioning by 10 pm as he has to rest after that. At the time of going to press, Asaram was still being interrogated by the police.

Earlier, his son Narayan Sai has said that his father was suffering from a neurological disorder and would fly to Jodhpur, where he is wanted in a sexual assault on a minor girl, as soon as his health improves.

Until then, Sai had said, the police could question him at the Indore ashram. He said the doctors had examined the self-styled godman and there was no question of his evading the arrest.

Pushya Karan Bhandari, Asaram’s lawyer, said his client has applied for an interim bail in Madhya Pradesh high court and denied Asaram has been evading arrest.

‘I appeal you, as you have all the means available, to go through the medical report of the girl. It doesn’t say the sexual assault has taken place, not even a bruise,’ Bhandari said amid sloganeering by Asaram’s followers.
But Jodhpur deputy commissioner of police Ajay Lamba had said a police team deputed from Rajasthan had reached Indore in the evening to question Asaram.

‘He will be arrested if he doesn’t cooperate. Medical officers have examined him and he is fit to travel and fit enough for questioning,’ Lamba said.
