Cops pay for asking youths to remove car

Four persons have been arrested for allegedly creating ruckus and beating up a Delhi Police constable when they were asked to remove their car parked on the route of President Pratibha Devisingh Patil’s cavalcade late on Monday night, police said.

According to a senior police official, Manoj Gupta, Ankit Rana and Anuj Gupta, residents of Gautam Nagar, and Manish Gupta, of Jawahar Nagar, were held after the incident took place around 11 pm on Monday near Krishna Menon Marg.

A one-and-half-year-old girl travelling with them was later handed over to her family.

‘Roads were blocked for smooth passage of President’s cavalcade when a Hyundai i10 car approached a barricade at Sunehri Bagh Road from the wrong side. Its driver parked in such a way that when the blockade was over, it would have obstructed traffic on the road for other passengers,’ a senior police officer said.

Head constable Ramesh Singh and constable Umesh Meena asked them to remove the car, but the occupants left the girl in the car and got started a heated argument.

Manoj, Manish, Ankit and Anuj then hurled abuses at both the officials and eventually physically manhandled constable Umesh.

They were, however, overpowered by the staff of nearby police control room vehicles and their car was also seized.

‘The four men were later handed over to Tughlaq Road police station and a case was lodged against them over a statement by Ramesh. It’s alleged that they also tore Umesh’s uniform,’ the official added.

Manoj, Manish, Ankit and Anuj face charges of obstructing public servants, assault with criminal force and causing hurt under sections 186, 353 and 332. Umesh later received medical treatment for minor injuries at nearby Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

Sources said that the accused were under the influence of alcohol and started hurling abuses without any provocation.
