Cops on lookout for man who posed as MP’s brother, duped lawyer

A person claiming himself as the brother of Trinamool Congress MP Mukul Roy took a hefty sum from a lawyer and fled.

The New Town police are on the lookout for that person and a case has been filed by the victim.

Police said, the accused Pradip Roy had allegedly taken around Rs 57 lakh from a Calcutta High Court lawyer a few days ago. The lawyer was promised a government job for his relative and a license which is mandatory to set up a private school in Kolkata.

Police have learnt that Roy allegedly had claimed that Trinamool MP Mukul Roy is his elder brother. He has several sources including deputy Commissioner in Bikas Bhavan who will abide by his order to give license to the lawyer.

Police said, Sovan Das, the lawyer transferred the money to Roy’s account, but was later denied by
the accused of having his desired license. Roy, however, started to avoid Das and denied all promises. He was not even accessible to return the money.

Das had gone to additional deputy Commissioner of police, Bidhannagar, Joy Tudu to lodge complaint.

“The deal took place at New Town’s Eco Park, where the accused came to meet
the complaint lawyer. So, the case has been registered in New Town police station,” said a top brass of Bidhannagar police.

Meanwhile, the investigators have summoned the accused but he did not come for the interrogation process. “We are looking to nab the person as soon as possible. We have his picture and contact numbers. His mobile phone tower location has been traced,” the officer added.

Das, the victim who is a resident of Kolkata’s Girish Park said that one of his fellow lawyers in High Court had given him the contact of Roy.
