The city police on Friday arrested a fake IPS officer, identified as Soumen Suryabanshi from Baguiati area in North 24 Parganas who used to extort money from people claiming himself to be the additional superintendent of police at Bokaro.

Following specific information, a team of officers from the Kasba police station on late Thursday night raided the flat where the accused had been living for quite some time and detained him.

Later, he was brought to the police station for interrogation following which he was arrested. The fake IPS officer used to live in Kasba earlier but later shifted to Baguiati around eight months ago to evade arrest.

Police have seized a fake identity card and a SUV car fitted with beacon light from his possession.

Kolkata police had received several complaints against the accused due to which police started an investigation in this regard.

The matter had first attracted the attention of police after he started demanding a ransom from youth Trinamool Congress leader Kaniska Majumder whose car had met with a road accident near Bijon Setu last year.

After starting the investigation, the police had arrested the driver of the youth Trinamool Congress leader. During that time, the police also came to know about the accused who was demanding money from Majumder.

This had also aroused the suspicion of Majumder who had a telephonic conversation with a senior police officer of Jharkhand and came to know from the latter that there is no such IPS officer by that name. The matter also became clear to the city police and they were conducting a search for the accused.

Police said that the accused used to introduce himself as a senior officer of Jharkhand police and extort money from the people. He used a SUV car fitted with a beacon light and there were two security guards in his house. Police said they would produce the fake IPS to the court for further remand.

The accused used to extort money from the businessmen, owners of the cars that met with road accidents and some other people. He used to threaten people that they would face dire consequences if his demands for money were not met. During investigation, the police came to know that the accused resides in Baguiati and has been harassing people posing himself as senior police officer.
