Consumer panel stays fines against IRCTC

The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC), based on the grounds extended in appeals by Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC), ordered a stay on the earlier orders of the New Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum. The District Forum had earlier imposed a punitive compensation of Rs 5 lakhs each on the Corporation on two separate complaints.
In its appeal, IRCTC had said that the complainants had produced fabricated invoices to prove that the Corporation had overcharged in selling fruit drinks. This misled the Forum in awarding the above orders of paying compensation. The State Commission observed, ‘Grounds mentioned in the application were sufficient, therefore application is allowed.’
