Consumer court asks doc to pay Rs 25 lakh to victim’s family

A consumer court on Saturday has directed a city based doctor to compensate Rs 25 lakh to the family members of the victim, who died due to negligence in treatment.

Shyamali Sikdar, wife of the victim Ananda Sikdar, said the patient was admitted to a nursing home in the city where the doctor conducted a tumor surgery on his head without the permission of the patient’s relatives.

Ananda eventually died after the operation. She said the accused doctor carried out clinical tests and said that there was a blood clot in his brain. He then went ahead and performed the surgery without the family’s consent.

The patient had died in the nursing following the operation.  On Saturday, the court observed that the nursing home, where the doctor performed the surgery, did not have proper infrastructure to carry out such an operation and instructed the doctors to provide a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the deceased family.
