Constant barbs on woman’s character may drive her to suicide: Court

Regular uttering of words, questioning a woman’s character would lead her to end her life, a Delhi court has said, while sending a man to over three years in jail for harassing and abetting his wife’s suicide.

The court said though the 25-year-old man was not at home when his wife committed suicide by hanging herself, uttering of words and quarreling over her character has led the woman to take the extreme step.

“If we analyze the evidence, it has been established that accused was quarrelsome with the deceased by using these words... though accused was not even at home, yet uttering these words as well as quarreling over character of deceased has led her to commit suicide.

“It is direct abetment and incitement which left no option to the deceased but to commit suicide. In fact, deceased did so in this case,” Additional Sessions Judge Atul Kumar Garg said.
