Constable suffering from depression shoots self

A constable of the Kolkata Police on Tuesday shot himself dead from his service revolver early in the morning when he was on duty in a kiosk at Shyambazar five-point crossing.

Police said the victim Chandu Mandi was suffering from various ailments for the past few months and it had led to depression, which the preliminary investigation suggest to be the reason behind the incident.

Mandi was posted at Shyampukur Police station and alike all other days he went to the kiosk with two other constables. Police came to know after speaking to a home guard who was accompanying him that he didn’t speak much the entire night. He remained seated inside the kiosk till morning and had not come out of it even for once.

The home guard was standing outside the kiosk when he heard the sound of a gunshot. Turning back he found Mandi lying on the floor of the kiosk. He immediately informed the officers in Shyampukur police station.

The policemen took him to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The body has been sent for an autopsy. Police initiated a probe in this connection and would once again question the home guard.

Police also spoke to the family members of the victim, but they have failed to give any reason for which Mandi took such a step.

Police officers from Shyampukur police station said that it was true that he was unwell for the past few days. But there was nothing suspicious in his behavior.

It may be recalled that another constable of the Kolkata Armed Police had committed suicide while performing duty of a sentry at Writers’ Building a few years ago.

A senior police officer said that such incidents are really unexpected and they would take up the matter to the concerned authority to assure that such incident does not take place.
