Consensual sex not rape, Nagaland says in report to Centre

According to agency reports, the girl went with the accused on her own. This is what was also claimed by the ‘rape accused’ Sayed Shareef in his statement to the police. He was in police custody for a day before being lynched last Thursday by a mob. He was later buried on Sunday at his home town, Karimganj in Assam. Shareef’s family has alleged that he was framed.

Meanwhile, four more persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the lynching of the rape accused. On the other hand, authorities relaxed prohibitory orders for 12 hours. Internet and SMS/MMS services, however, continued to be blocked. Police said four more persons were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the lynching. A total of 47 people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kohima, Kakheto said.

Shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and government offices opened as the prohibitory order was lifted from 6 AM to 6 PM on Wednesday. Vehicles plied on the road and large number of people thronged markets.
