Congress workers thrash policemen in Malda

Five police personnel, including two officers, were injured when they were attacked by some people while conducting raids to nab local goons.

The incident had occurred Kumarganj village under Pathuria police station on late Saturday night in Malda.

The injured police personnel are undergoing treatment at a hospital as some of them are stated to be in serious condition.

It has been alleged some local Congress leaders are involved behind the attack on the policemen.

It was learnt that the district police had started a drive against the local anti-socials few days ago and arrested some dreaded criminals from various areas.

On Saturday night, a team headed by assistant sub-inspector Arsad Ali and Hashimoy Sikdar had gone to Kumarganj area in a raid.

They reached Sripur II panchayat, adjacent to the Kumarganj railway station to arrest the husband of a local panchayat pradhan who has been involved in various crimes.

When the accused who is also a Congress leader in the locality, Mohabbat Seikh came to know that that the police raided his house to arrest him, he called up his party colleagues about the matter.

Following the incident hundreds of villagers with various weapons surrounded the police vehicle and dragged them out from the vehicle.

The villagers who are believed to be potential Congress supporters attacked the police personnel and beat them up.

After being beaten up, the police personnel somehow managed to flee the spot.

They were admitted to a local hospital but were later shifted to Malda Medical College and Hospital as their condition deteriorated.

The two police officers received injuries on their head. Police have started a probe in this regard and initiated raid at various places to nab the culprits who had attacked the police personnel.
