On Saturday night, a team headed by assistant sub-inspector Arsad Ali and Hashimoy Sikdar had gone to Kumarganj area in a raid.

They reached Sripur II panchayat, adjacent to the Kumarganj railway station to arrest the husband of a local panchayat pradhan who has been involved in various crimes.

When the accused who is also a Congress leader in the locality, Mohabbat Seikh came to know that that the police raided his house to arrest him, he called up his party colleagues about the matter.

Following the incident hundreds of villagers with various weapons surrounded the police vehicle and dragged them out from the vehicle.

The villagers who are believed to be potential Congress supporters attacked the police personnel and beat them up.

After being beaten up, the police personnel somehow managed to flee the spot.

They were admitted to a local hospital but were later shifted to Malda Medical College and Hospital as their condition deteriorated.

The two police officers received injuries on their head. Police have started a probe in this regard and initiated raid at various places to nab the culprits who had attacked the police personnel.
