Congress set to crack whip on old guard

It is now a  fight to the finish within the Congress with party’s vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s sympathisers managing to convince his mother and party president Sonia Gandhi to crack the whip on party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi. The senior Congress leader for several years has been close aide of Sonia Gandhi.

The Congress on Thursday condemned Dwivedi’s pro-Modi remark, as party leader Ajay Maken said, “The recent statement given by Janardan Dwivediji is being considered as ‘Modiji’s win is a victory of Indianness’. Congress party strongly condemns the way ‘Indianness’ has been compared with Modiji.”

“Narendra Modi ji kisi bhi tarah se Bharatiyata ke soochak ya prateek nahi hain (By any stretch of imagination, Narendra Modi is not the symbol of Indianness). What he (Janardan Dwivedi) has said is definitely not the viewpoint of Congress. Party leadership will discuss about the disciplinary action against him.”

Soon after Maken’s press conference, Dwivedi clarified on his reported statement, insisting that he had never praised Modi. “I have never said that Modi is a representative of Indianness,” he said adding, “I could have never have said that.” Meanwhile later on Thursday evening Dwivedi met senior party leader AK Antony, head of Congress disciplinary panel to explain his remark on Modi.

Dwivedi, on Wednesday was quoted by a web portal saying that Modi has started a “new era”. “Modi has been successful in convincing people that from a social point of view, he is closest to Indian citizens. His is a victory of Indianness,” Dwivedi was quoted in the interview.
