Congress seeks more time to build consensus on Telangana

The Congress core group, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi, has once again postponed the decision on demands for a separate Telangana state.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has said after the party’s core group meeting over the issue of Telangana, that the core group had decided that the final call on Telangana would be taken by the Congress Working Committee.

Earlier on Friday, union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde assured a delegation of political parties supporting the creation of a separate state of Telangana, that they would very soon hear good news in connection with the issue.

The delegation met Shinde ahead of a crucial meeting of the Congress core group on demands for a separate Telangana state.  Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (TJAC) member B. Vinod Kumar said Shinde has assured the decision would be in their favour.

‘He assured us, 100% you are going to listen the good news. 100%, we are going to take decision in favour of Telangana. You be happy and don’t worry’, he said.  B Vinod Kumar, leader of regional Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which spearheads the movement for a separate state, promised to support the Congress Party in the coming polls only if Telangana was created with Hyderabad as its capital.

‘We demand, with Hyderabad, Telangana. Without Hyderabad, we won’t support the Congress Party,’ he added.
Congress MPs from Telangana have so far accused the Centre of following what they call a ‘one-step-forward-two-backward’ approach when it comes to addressing their demand for a separate state. Meanwhile, Congress leader S Rajaiah has come to the defence of his party, saying the discussions are on and a final decision would be taken soon.

Ahead of the crucial Congress meeting on Telangana, Andhra Pradesh chief minister Kirankumar Reddy on Friday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and briefed her about the political situation in the state. The meeting came amid indications that Congress has decided to spell out a clear stand on the vexed issue of separate statehood soon.

Sources said that more than half a dozen Lok Sabha MPs from Telangana region on Friday held a meeting at the residence of MP Ponnam Prabhakar.

The meeting was also attended by ministers from Telangana region in the Reddy-led government in the state. The MPs Prabhakar, Madhuyakshi Goud, Sukhender Reddy, S Rajaiah, Suresh Kumar Shetkar and others also held a meeting at the residence of AICC secretary.
