Congress gears up for assembly by-election in Uttarakhand

Congress high-command has finalised the list of three candidates for assembly by-polls on Thursday. ‘Chief minister Harish Rawat from Dharchula, senior Congress leader Hira Singh Bisht from Doiwala and Rekha Arya from Someshwar (reserved) will contest by-polls which will be held on 21 July,’ party spokesperson Shilpi Arora said.

Taking lessons from the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections in which Congress is believed to have suffered due to the late declaration of candidates, this party has declared its candidates. Winning all three seats will strengthen the position of party in assembly and lessen dependence on allies especially Progressive Democratic Front (PDF). On the other hand, arch rival BJP is yet to declare its candidates for three vacant assembly seats.

In Gairsain special session, Rawat’s protégé Harish Dhami proved his loyalty by vacating his Dharchula seat on 10 June so that the former’s entry into assembly becomes safe and hassle-free.
Party high-command has reposed faith in old candidate Hira Singh Bisht again who lost by a thin margin of 1,000 votes from Doiwala seat against BJP’s Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in last assembly elections in 2012.

Recently, former chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal vacated his Doiwala assembly seat since he won Haridwar parliamentary seat. If BJP fields two-time legislature Trivendra Singh Rawat from Doiwala seat, then it is not going to be a smooth walk for Congress candidate in the coming by-poll.
Rekha Arya, who recently joined back Congress after a brief stint in BJP, is a popular leader in the constituency. Senior Congress leaders are of the view that she has the winning potential.
