Congress defends RS deputy chairman, BJP doesn’t relent

The BJP’s Kerala unit on Friday demanded the resignation of deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha P J Kurien in the Suryanelli sex case. While on the other hand the Congress defended Kurien, who has been allegedly accused in the the 17-year-old Suryanelli rape case.

‘The charge against Kurien was judicially examined. Those who did it said in their collective wisdom that he was not involved,’ said Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury on Friday.

She said the party ‘could not react emotionally’ to the issue as ‘none of us are in full awareness of facts.’ ‘We can’t speculate on it now,’ she said.

While speaking to a TV channel, Kurien said he is innocent and in fact he was ‘the one who has been wronged.’

He went on to say in the interveiw, ‘My conscience is clear and the case is a political one.’

In the session that starts on 21 February, parliament is scheduled to debate a recent set of anti-rape laws cleared by the government as an ordinance. Kurien’s detractors argue that given the charges against him, it would be grossly inappropriate for the 72-year-old parliamentarian to chair discussions in the Rajya Sabha.
