‘Compared to other states, Delhi’s crime rate not bad’

Health minister A K Walia stated that the city government has been stressing on the need to bring improvement in the functioning of Delhi police, keeping in view the present law and order situation, during the short duration discussion on Thursday initiated by V K Malhotra, Mukesh Sharma, S P Ratawal and Parlad Singh Sawhney in Vidhan Sabha.

The leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly, Malhotra, started the debate on the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi.

Walia pointed out that during 2011, 543 cases of murder were registered in Delhi whereas in Madhya Pradesh the figure was 2,511, Bihar 3,198, Gujarat 1,126 and Chhatisgarh 1,110.  Similarly, he said, the cases of rape on per lakh population were 5.3 in Bhopal, 5.0 in Jabalpur, 4.4 in Gwalior, 4.2 in Indore, but in Delhi it is 2.8.

However, the members of opposition protested that the government’s ‘justification’ by giving data of the other states is not healthy.

Parliamentary secretary to CM, Mukesh Sharma, suggested a separate police commissioner for New Delhi. According to him, a DGP may also be appointed to head the police system in Delhi.
