Communal tension prevails in Bareilly, police lathicharge

As the district administration has imposed curfew since the beginning, huge deployment of the police along with paramilitary forces was  even witnessed on Friday. Amid minor incidents and scuffle with the police, no major incident was reported on Friday. District administration will book more than 400 persons and 18 to be arrested including key accused Saddam.

“The situation is under control and we are taking all care to ensure that peace and the rule of law prevails in the violence-hit areas,” a home department official said. Clashes erupted in Fatehganj
area of the city on Wednesday night after an animal carcass was found next to a religious place.

While police and district officials acted promptly and defused the situation, violence broke out on Thursday in which dozens people were injured.

The agitated protesters were demanding arrest of those responsible for defilement of a place of worship in Fatehganj Paschim area here. Later the cops imposed Section 144 of CrPC (Prohibitory Orders) and also arrested the troublemakers.

Irate crowds pelted stones at the police personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) after which the police used mild force. The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trained its guns on Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bareilly Dharamveer Yadav accusing him of victimising workers and supporters of the BJP and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. State BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai said the district police chief was working in a biased manner and victimising the party workers.

“We have already arrested three of the miscreants apprehending violence”, said Satish Ganesh, IG law and order while briefing mediapersons. He said that as the police rushed to the area, some anti-social elements were indulged in brick batting and vandalism so the cops had to use mild force and lob tear gas shells to control them, the IG said.
