CM promises land for N-E students’ hostel in capital

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has committed to allot land near Delhi University for construction of hostels for students from the North-Eastern region, one each for boys and girls, official sources said here on Sunday.

The response from the Delhi chief minister came when a delegation of N-E representatives headed by Lok Sabha member Takam Sanjoy called on her on Saturday with the plea for land, the sources said.

As the decision was endorsed by AICC during a meeting chaired by Congress working committee member and union road and transport minister Oscar Fernandes on 16 July last, Dikshit said she will talk to DU vice chancellor on Monday to decide whether the hostels should be located within the DU
campus or outside.

The Centre would be providing funds for which the estimate would be prepared soon after the land is allotted and submitted for sanction, Sanjoy said. Sanjoy also requested implementation of the
Rent Control Act by executing a legally documented agreement.

‘This is due to practical problems faced by our students where landlords misuse the restriction by arbitrarily enhancing rents by 40-50 per cent, using it as an instrument to remove the tenants at will,’ he pointed out.
The Delhi Arunachal Forum (DelAru) has also placed the same demand with the state's MPs recently.
