CM announces new International Convention Centre in Digha

The Bengal government will construct the state’s second International Convention Centre in Digha, said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after inaugurating the Bengal Information Technology Park at Haldia on Monday.

The first International Convention Centre in the state is coming up in Rajarhat.

Banerjee said, “I am trying to develop an International Convention Centre in Digha. There are many companies that organise different conventions in Goa. They also want to organize the same in Digha. Therefore, we have decided to create infrastructure in Digha so that holding of such major events can be facilitated there as well.”

Digha is the favourite seaside tourist spot in Bengal. Banerjee had assured people of creating Goa-like infrastructure in Digha during election rallies ahead of the 2011 Assembly polls and accordingly, it had been given a complete new look to attract tourists after the change of guard in the state. Digha beach had been made WiFi-enabled and series of projects were undertaken for its beautification. There will be all sorts of facilities including lodging facilities, auditoriums, huge conference and seminar halls in the International Convention Centre.

The Chief Minister said, “I have asked the Urban Development department to prepare a plan for the International Convention Centre in Digha. It will increase the business potential of Digha and the economy of the region will further improve with the construction of the International Convention Centre. Haldia is also close to the spot and it will help to attract more investment,” she said adding that the Bengal IT Park at Haldia has come up at a cost of Rs 24 crore.

Steps were taken to ensure round-the-clock uninterrupted power supply in the IT Park at Haldia where IT and ITeS companies will get the “plug-n-play” facilities.

Banerjee further said that the Software Technology Park is coming up in Salt Lake and IT parks will also be constructed in different parts of the state.

The inauguration of the IT Park in Haldia ahead of the Bengal Global Business Summit has come up as a
major development in the state’s IT sector.
