Cloud-burst in Tehri District

According to Yashwant Singh, in-charge, district information officer of Tehri district, a cloud-burst was reported in Ghansali at noon with no human casualty. The constant rainfall since morning in many regions disrupted normal life accompanied by landslides, which harmed farm land. As per locals, some cattle also perished in the landslides. On Tuesday night, heavy raining and landslides in Bhikona village, Pokhri block headquarter, in the Chamoli district resulted in collapse of a house, which caused the death of five members of the same family.

According to Uttarakhand space application centre (USAC), a 2500 sq. km. artificial lake has been formed near the origin of Alaknanda river. Situated at the height of 7,000 metres between Santopant and Bhagirithi Kadak glacier, this artificial lake has caused panic among locals residing near the river bank. A satellite data report from Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) has confirmed this report of the formation of artificial lake. These two agencies are constantly monitoring the development in the artificial lake. The state administration and district administration has been constantly watching the situation, and people living near the banks of the river have been evacuated to safer places.
