Class XI student tries to escape eve-teasers, mowed down

In a shocking incident, a girl studying in Class XI died while two of her friends were injured when three youth mowed them down with a car they were travelling in on NH-41 off Tajpur-Mahishadal in East Midnapore.

The police arrested two youth while the third one fled. The director general of police Surajit Kar Purakayastha said a murder case would be initiated against the accused. He said such cases would not be tolerated.

The police said the victim along with two of her friends was going for tuition on their bicycles. The car carrying a driver and three youth had been teasing them for quite some time.

They made lewd comments and were chasing their cycles. The victim along with two others tried to flee the spot by peddling fast. Unable to control the vehicle, the driver hit the victim from behind who died on the spot. The two others were taken to the hospital where they were admitted.

Local people chased the vehicle and stopped it. They got hold of the two youth while the third one and the driver fled. The youth were beaten up and later handed over to the police. Police went to the spot and rescued the accused. After hitting the victim, the vehicle fell into a ditch.

The incident created tension in the area with local people demanding exemplary punishment of the
accused. The police during investigation came to know that the driver did not have a driving licence.

Local people said they had informed the police that the area had become a favourite spot for the eve teasers.

But despite repeated complaints the police did not do anything. The police began a combing operation to round up the two other persons. Senior officers said they would be arrested soon as all of them live in the area.
