Class X student commits suicide under pressure to withdraw case against rapist

A class X student, who was allegedly raped by a youth on 2 July, committed suicide at her relatives’ residence here following alleged threats from the accused’s family to withdraw the case, police said on Friday.

The girl committed suicide on Thursday by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her relatives’ residence in the Faridnagar area here, police said. The girl along with her family had shifted from their residence in Galand area in Masuri to their relatives’ house 15 days back as they were being pressurised by the accused’s family to withdraw the rape case against him.

Dharmender, a student of mobile engineering, along with two accomplices had abducted the girl from the Galand area on 2 July and took her to an isolated place, where Dharmender raped her. Following the incident, the girl and her family had filed a complaint and a case had been registered against Dharmender. He had also been arrested.

The girl’s family has claimed that Dharmender, a resident of the same area, belongs to an influential family and they had been pressurising them to withdraw the case. The parents have further alleged that despite their shifting to Faridnagar, the boy’s family had continued to mount pressure on them following which their daughter was mentally disturbed. ‘We have sent the girl’s body for post mortem examination. We would interrogate Dharmender’s family and further investigation is on,’ a senior police officer said.
