Class on Maoists held for cops

Intending to sensitise the security personnel about the Maoist problem, which is apparently getting a stronghold in the national capital, Delhi Police held a special training class for its senior police officials on Friday. A day-long class was held in this regard at Police Headquarters on Friday.

Under senior Indian Police Services [IPS] officers, especially called from Naxal-affected areas, personnel from Crime Branch, Special Cell and inspectors attended the class.

The class was held after noticing lack of sensitisation and exposure about Naxals among Delhi cops, said a senior police officer.

‘It was basically a sensitisation course for Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners and inspectors,’ said Additional Deputy Commissioner of police [special cell] Sanjeev Yadav.

‘We cannot tackle such problems without knowing about their ill-effects on nation’s peace and harmony,’ said Yadav.

The seven-hour class was organised in two phases and it began at 10 am. IPS officers from national agencies, such as Intelligence Bureau [IB], and officials from states of Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal took the class with Delhi police officials. ‘They talked about the ideological concept of Naxalism and Maoism, and their operating and working style in the area,’ Yadav added.

In the last few months, many Naxals and Maoists have been apprehended by Delhi police’s Crime Branch. Two suspected Naxals were arrested in the last one month only. They belong to Jharkhand and weapons were also recovered from their possession.

Shiva Kumar alias Shiva, an ‘ace guerilla fighter’, as described by investigators, was arrested on 7 June from Delhi’s Rohini area. He was an expert in handling landmines and sophisticated arms. Last month, 42-year-old suspected Maoist Pradeep Kumar was arrested from Delhi. He was wanted in murder case and attack on police parties. Police confiscated weapons from both of them.
