Class nine student jumps off school building in Howrah

A class IX students of an English medium school at Shibpur in Howrah attempted suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of a school building on Tuesday morning, police said.

According to police, they are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind her suicide attempt but they suspect that she took such step after she was asked to bring her guardian to school as a mobile phone was found in her school bag.

Sources said the school authorities have issued a notice restricting the use of mobile phones by students during school hours.

It was also said that strict steps will be taken if a student was found using mobile phone inside the school campus.

On Tuesday morning, a teacher found a mobile phone in the girl’s bag.

She was asked to bring her parents to school on Wednesday as the teacher wanted to speak to them, police said.

After around an hour, the schools security men heard a sound. When they rushed outside, they found the girl lying in an unconscious state. She was immediately rushed to a hospital where she was admitted at intensive critical care unit.

Doctors said she received injuries on her head and was under observation.

During investigation, police came to know that the student came out of the classroom and jumped off from the fourth floor verandah.

According to a police officer, the girl took such step as she feared that she will be scolded by her parents when they will come to know that she was carrying a mobile phone at school.

The school authorities informed the police and the girl’s parents.

Police went to the hospital, but it was not possible for them to take statement of the girl. Police officers spoke to the girl’s parents.

The school authorities, however, could not be contacted for comments.
