Clash breaks out between police and mob after truck runs over girl

Rasulpur in Burdwan virtually turned into a battleground after a clash broke out between police and agitating mob following a road accident claiming the life of an 18-year-old girl.

The mob turned violent and attacked the police personnel who reached to the spot to pacify them.

The mob put up a road block and did not allow the police to take the body for post-mortem.

When the police tried to lift the road block a scuffle broke out between the police and the agitating mob. The local people attacked the police personnel, pelted stones at them in which some policemen received injuries. The mob also damaged some vehicles standing on the GT road after the accident. As the situation went beyond control senior police officers in the district rushed to the spot and a huge contingent of police force was deployed to quell the mob.

The police had to resort to lathi charge to bring the situation under control. They also burst tear gas cells to disperse the huge mob gathered on the GT road in Memari on Thursday. The Central Forces jawans who were deployed in the district for election duty were also asked to rush to the spot to manage the situation.

Police said that the victim, Madhu Mullick who was a second year a student of Memari College was going to the college on her bicycle along the GT road when the accident took place.

A loaded truck on its way to Burdwan lost control and hit her. The girl died at the spot. The local residents started demonstration and put up road block resulting in huge traffic jam on the GT road. The vehicles were stranded from bumper to bumper.

Local residents alleged despite of the repeated pleas police failed to take steps against the over speeding vehicles.

As it was a busy road there is always a possibility of road accidents if the vehicles ply in high speed, said local people.

They also alleged that they had urged the district administration to carry out regular surveillance and crack down the over-speeding vehicles but the police are yet to take any action against the offenders.

They have threatened to go on a bigger movement if their demands were not made.

Police are conducting raids to nab the culprit and the killer vehicle. The accused fled the spot along with the vehicle following the accident.
