Civil rights bodies up in arms

Terming it as anti-farmer, a slew of civil rights organisations and trade unions from across the country on Sunday asked the Narendra Modi led central government to withdraw the controversial new land ordinance. The organisations, which include Medha Patkar’s Narmada Bachao Andolan and National Alliance of People’s Movement are organising protests across the country, including here at Jantar Mantar, on February 24 against the move, saying the move is a risk to food security. Anna Hazare is also likely to join the protest against the move.

“The Land Ordinance takes away safeguards offered to the farmers and project affected families by removing the key provisions of consent and social impact assessment,” they said in a joint statement.
