Civic volunteer’s body found near police station

Mystery shrouds the death of a civic volunteer whose body was recovered from a road near Goghat police station in Hooghly.

Tension ran high in the area after the local people staged demonstration on the road throwing the traffic completely out of gear. Despite of the repeated pleas from the senior police officers, the mob continued the agitation and threatened to go for a bigger movement if the culprits were not arrested.

As situation went beyond control, police resorted to the lathi charge after a scuffle broke out between the police and the local people. The local residents, however, alleged that police lathi charged on the passers-by without any provocations in which some of the persons received injuries.

The situation turned hostile after some the local residents alleged that the victim was murdered inside the police station and later the accused dumped his body on the road just close to the police station. After the allegation surfaced, the mob gheraoed the senior police officers who were present at the spot.

A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot to prevent any untoward incident. Senior police officers tried to convince people to lift the road block. After a long time, the local people removed their road block after getting assurance from the senior police officers in the districts that the accused would soon be nabbed. The local people alleged that it was a pre-planned murder.

Local people spotted the body on Sunday morning and informed the matter to the Goghat police station situated at a stone’s throw away. Police said that Hare Krishna Chakraborty (25), the civic volunteer was a local resident. The residents said that the victim was a good-natured person and he had no enemies in the locality. They are shocked and have no idea about the motive behind the murder of the victim. The body has been sent for post-mortem and a detailed probe has been initiated.
