Civic volunteer dies after scuffle

Son of a Panchayat Samiti member was killed by a person after the accused’s name was dropped from the BPL list. The incident occurred at Udaynaraynpur area in Howrah on Tuesday night. 

The victim, Jayanta Santra who is the son of a Panchayat Samiti member was slashed with a sharp weapon when he was sitting inside a local club on Tuesday night. The accused Bappa Pandit attacked 

him with a weapon all of a sudden.

The victim fell on the ground in a pool of blood, while the accused fled the spot. The local people rushed him to a nearby hospital where he died later. Police said that both the accused and the victim were working as civic volunteer in the area. The incident had created tension in the area. A mob had attacked the house of the victim and set a portion of it on fire.

A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police said that there was a quarrel between the Jayanta and Bappa over the removal of the name of the latter’s from the BPL list. 

The accused had held the victim the responsible for the removal of his name and the situation turned hostile. The accused has been at large since the incident took place.
