Civic bodies allege political motivation behind LG meeting

BJP ruled municipal corporations are up in arms against Lieutenant Governor (LG), Najeeb Jung, for deciding to convene a meeting of only municipal corporations on the issue of  mid-day meals, sanitation and overall cleanliness in the city. The meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday afternoon.

'The decision to hold this meeting seems to be politically motivated. Delhi government is the nodal agency for mid-day meals in the city. It also provides mid-day meals to approximately 1.5 lakh students in primary and upper-primary schools run by it. We are awaiting directions from the Delhi government on actions to be taken against NGOs supplying sub-standard mid-day meals to civic body-run schools. Any meeting without the presence of the nodal agency is a futile exercise,' Azad Singh, mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation told

on Friday evening.

'We have made video clippings of waterlogging and undisposed garbage in our area. It is all due to lack of proper functioning of the public works department (PWD), which is under the Delhi government,' he added. Singh said, 'I have convened a meeting of the house on Monday at 2 pm so I don't think the officers will be able to attend the LG’s meeting.' The LG has summoned all three municipal corporations at 3 pm on Monday.

'The main issue in the city is lack of coordination among various agencies. The LG’s decision to summon only the corporations makes no sense and will not yield anything. He should have called all concerned stake-holders,’ said Satish Upadhayay, chairman of the education committee in South DMC.
