City to get localised rain during Kali Puja

Localised rain is predicted on Saturday which is on the day of Kali Puja. The cyclone Kyant’ on the Bay of Bengal lost its strength to become a deep depression.

An axis of this deep depression has spread over the West central Bay of Bengal to reach Andhra Pradesh. This axis has also gone over Gangetic Bengal and created medium or little rainfall over Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and some parts of East Midnapore.

Cyclone ‘Kyant’ in Bay of Bengal will cause thunderstorms in Andhra Pradesh, as the state was put on alert, but parts of West Bengal and Odisha are likely to be spared. Cyclone Kyant, which means crocodile in the Mon language spoken in parts of Myanmar and Thailand, is also expected to dump heavy rains along the coast of the two states.

However, rain has already soaked the city on Friday morning. The organisers of Kali Puja in the city have now heaved a sigh of relief. Earlier, they were confused if heavy rainfall will lead to an inundation during the festival of lights.

The IMD has predicted that the heavy rainfall will give Kolkata a miss this Kali Puja. Sectional rain is predicted on Saturday and Sunday. Some parts of the Bengal, especially in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly will witness medium rainfall.

IMD said that Kyant is not expected to be as devastating as earlier cyclones such as Aila, Phailin and Hudhud and fishermen have been warned not to venture out into the sea. Phailin had killed 36 people in Odisha in 2013. Cyclones Phailin and Hudhud battered the Odisha coast during the post-monsoon period in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

Meteorologists of Bangladesh predicted that Kyant may hit Odisha of India by October 29. The sky will remain cloudy for the depression caused by the storm and light rains may take place over the country and heavy shower may also occur in Khulna, Chittagong and Barisal division.

The weather of the areas is to remain cloudy for three days from Friday. The rain in Kali Puja may be seen during the day time, but clear sky will be witnessed at night. The day after Kali Puja will witness a sunny day.
