City police on high alert for I-Day

After receiving uncorroborated information about possible terrorist attacks ahead of Independence Day, Delhi police has made elaborate security arrangements at the city's Red Fort where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will unfurl the national flag on Wednesday.

'The Red Fort area has been divided into three security zones and 6000 police personnel will be deployed in the area during the event. As many as 58 Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras would be installed in the periphery of the Red fort,' the deputy commissioner of police (north) Sindhu Pillai, said. 'Our focus would be on strict vigilance during the function at the venue. The capacity of the area is 5000 including VVIPs, Pillai said.

18 machans and 49 morchas (groups of coups who will be posted at various points at the venue) will be put in place at Red Fort on Independence Day. Apart from the permanently installed CCTV cameras in the area, 58 more have been installed specially for the occasion to check any suspicious activity. These cameras will be monitored from the Kotwali police station.

The three security zones will be handled by officers of the level of additional deputy commissioner of police. Each zone has been further divided into 15 sectors at the venue place.

These sectors would be look after by officials of the rank of assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Pillai added. There would be a deployment of spotters or specially trained personnel by the Delhi police, who will keep a lookout for any special activities or persons during the function. To ensure smooth function of the security arrangements for Independence Day, a special meeting was held at the Police Headquarters on Saturday under the supervision of the special commissioner of police (law and order) Dharmender Kumar. Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar will hold a meeting with the senior police officers on Mondayto discuss Independence Day security arrangements in the national capital. The security arrangements will be put in place 13 August evening, during the full dress rehearsal, and from August 14 midnight at the Red Fort and surrounding areas. These will include snipers, army and National Security Guard (NSG) commandos Pillai said.

Apart from this, from Sunday, Delhi Police and traffic police personnel have been spread out across the city to keep a check on important places as well as entry and exit points at
vulnerable locations.


SPECIAL TRAFFIC PLAN TO ENSURE SMOOTH FLOW

An elaborate traffic arrangement around Red Fort has been planned on the occasion of Independence Day on Wednesday. The same traffic restriction will also be followed during the full dress rehearsal of the programme on 13 August.

‘There will be elaborate traffic arrangements to facilitate the movement of VIP vehicles, invitees and the general public going for the Independence Day function at the Red Fort and also to ensure safe and smooth flow of traffic in other parts of the city,’ Satyendra Garg, joint CP, Delhi Police said. For security considerations, parking of vehicles will not be allowed at and around India Gate in the evenings from 12 August to 15 August. ‘ NDMC authorised paid parking, on the inner radial roads of India Gate and car parking behind the water channels shall remain closed after 5 PM every evening till 15 August’, he added.  A traffic official said, ‘Road side parking on any of the roads near India Gate such as Rajpath –Man Singh Road, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Tilak Marg, Purana Quila Road, Sher Shah Road, Zakir Hussain Marg, Pandara Road, Shahjahan Road, Akbar Road will not be possible.
