City comes to a halt as long tailbacks cause traffic jams

The peak hours in morning and evening were the worst affected as huge pile-ups of vehicles were witnessed on most of the roads connecting Delhi to the NCR cities-Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad, as commuters got stuck in snarls for hours.

Early morning, a massive jam was witnessed on NH24 due to a vehicle breakdown in Delhi area. The jam caused snarls at various junctions including Sarai Kale Khan, Akshardham, Ghazipur and in various parts of Ghaziabad. As traffic on this road came to a standstill, the two other alternate routes connecting Delhi to Noida--DND flyway and Kalindi Kunj road--also witnessed severe jams. Due to the pressure of traffic on the DND flyway, <g data-gr-id="49">vehicular</g> movement was affected in Ashram, Maharani Bagh and Mayur Vihar Phase-I area. “With traffic getting paralysed, commuters were stuck in jams for long hours. It took me two hours to reach office in Nehru Place from Noida in the morning and almost about the same time in the evening,” said Abhishek Khanna, a daily commuter.

Another breakdown of a vehicle early morning near Shanti Vana on Pushta road led to huge snarls and the commuters going towards Geeta Colony, Laxmi Nagar, Mother Dairy, Karkardooma, Karkari More and Shashtri Park were stranded for hours.

Leakage of a water pipe on Aurobindo Road in South Delhi also created a traffic mess and resulted in <g data-gr-id="31">slow</g> movement of vehicles throughout the day. Breakdown of a truck on a road in Shastri Park area also paralysed plying of vehicles and affected movement on Old-bridge for hours.

A demonstration at Sonia Hospital resulted into a huge jam on Rohtak road connecting the city to the neighbouring Bahadur Garh. Owing to a festival procession, movement of vehicles was affected in the Walled City area for a few hours. Traffic obstruction was also seen in the carriageway from Pusa Gate towards Bagga Link due to a breakdown of cluster bus.

Apart from this, traffic came to a halt at ITO, Barakhamba Road, Ranjeet Singh Road, Asaf Ali Road, DB Gupta Road and Paharganj in the evening. Situations worsened after the tailbacks reached Connaught Place and India Gate which were already choked due to peak hour traffic. By 6 pm, snarls were reported from Karnal Bypass, Durgapuri, Loni road, Ring road’s Rani Bagh area, Khajuri Chowk, Jhilmil to Shahdra, Lajpat Nagar, etc and traffic officials said that they had deployed additional personnel in these areas to clear the traffic mess but the huge number of vehicles led to a gridlock at the major intersections.
